Ancient Roman Republic Silver Denarius. Obverse : Head of Ancus Marcius, right, wearing diadem. R, Aqueduct, on which stands equestrian statue; at horse's feet, flower.
Graffito (light scratches) on top of obverse. This coin features the Aqua Marcia, the longest of Rome's aqueducts, responsible for bringing fresh water to the citizens of Rome. It was originally built in 144 BC, with much of the funding for its construction coming from the destruction and looting of Carthage after the Third Punic War.
Many parts and bridges of it still remain standing in Rome and the surrounding countryside to this day. Interested in other ancient Greek and Roman coins?
